Can You Really Predict the Size of a Maine Coon?

One of the most common questions we hear is: “How big will my Maine Coon kitten get?”
It’s completely understandable—this breed is famous for its impressive size, and naturally, owners are curious. While there are kitten growth charts and general expectations, the reality is much less predictable.
Kitten Size: A Helpful Hint, Not a Rule
Yes, you can lightly estimate a Maine Coon’s future size based on their weight and structure as a kitten. Bigger kittens often grow into bigger cats—but this is only a guideline, not a guarantee.
In our experience, many cats don’t follow the “standard” charts at all:
We’ve had kittens that were below average size early on and later became some of our largest adults.
At the same time, kittens that were on top of the charts—or even above them—grew into average-sized Maine Coons.
Every Maine Coon Grows at Their Own Pace
Maine Coons are known for their slow development. Unlike many other breeds, they continue growing until 3–4 years of age.
This means growth is not linear:
Some cats develop quickly early on and then slow down
Others take their time and grow steadily over several years
For example, we’ve had females weighing around 4 kg at one year old, who continued developing and reached 7 kg by the age of three.
Real-Life Experience: When Predictions Fail
One of our most memorable examples is a male who arrived at our cattery at 5 months old weighing just 2.5 kg.
He wasn’t underweight—just slim, tall, and not very fluffy, which made him appear smaller than expected for his age.
According to typical size expectations, he would not have been predicted to become a large cat.
Today, he weighs between 10 and 13 kg, depending on seasonal changes that affect his appetite. He turned out to be one of our biggest males—completely defying early predictions.
What Actually Determines Size?
A Maine Coon’s final size depends on a combination of factors:
Genetics (the most important factor)
Individual growth pattern
Nutrition and health
Hormonal influences
Because of this, two kittens that look very similar early on can develop into very different adults.
The Takeaway
Kitten size can give you a rough idea of future development—but it should never be taken as a certainty.
Maine Coons grow:
At their own pace
In their own way
And often in ways that surprise us
Final Thoughts
Instead of focusing too much on predicting size, it’s better to focus on raising a healthy, well-developed cat.
Some of the smallest kittens become the biggest adults, while some early giants grow into average-sized cats—and that’s perfectly normal.
In the end, every Maine Coon has its own unique growth journey—and that’s part of what makes them so special
